TREASURE HUNT GROUP THREAD

In Sinnoh’s efforts to encourage tourism and trainers, the gates around their underground network of tunnels has been open to the public for group digs.

Over the past month, advertisements have appeared on television with amateur miners showing off their finds, rare evolutionary stones and mysterious artifacts. Already, the decision has been a success for Sinnoh.

The newest group of applicants meet up in Eterna City at ten in the morning for their Underground adventure. An old miner waits for them outside of a cavern that leads under the region. Deep, brown rock rises all around, providing shade from the sun and buffering a fall gust.

The miner does a quick headcount, and nods. His hair grows in white with some dark black, but his beard remains dark. His face is lined with deep wrinkles, with a heavy brow and solemn eyes.

“Hello and welcome,” he says, his voice rough with years of working in mines. “My name is Pierce, and I will be your guide to the Underground.”

The entrance to the mine yawns wide in front of the group, large enough for them all to fit through shoulder-to-shoulder.

“And this is the Underground,” announces Pierce, pointing to the cavern. “Once you’re in there, you’ll see a lift that will take you down to the lower level. Only two may go at a time. You will wait for me until I get down before moving on. If you wander off, we cannot be held accountable for what happens to you. Understood?”

After waiting for the group’s approval, he turns on the the light atop his helmet. “Good. Follow me.”

He leads the group through the mouth of the cave, and the darkness closes in around them. It’s cold, as well, and the chirps of zubat echo against the walls.

“It narrows up here,” says Pierce.

The cavern tapers the closer they walk to the lift, until they’re crammed single-file, waiting to get onto the rickety, old elevator.

The thing clatters and groans as two-by-two they go down, and the doors open up and spill them out into a wider cavern with tunnels winding away from it.

Pierce is the last one down, sliding the lift’s gate closed behind him.

“You’ve got three tunnels to choose from.” He steps up in front of everyone and points at each one. He excludes the one furthest to the left, and points to the one next to it, already lit with lanterns along its walls. “That’s the easiest one,” he says, and then points to the center tunnel, which appears to veer toward the right, and the one on the left already seems to have been lit with lanterns. “Intermediate.”

From the tunnel furthest to the right comes a sudden, sharp sound; probably geodudes fighting with one another.

“The one to the right is the most challenging,” he concludes. “Whichever one you choose, we will all be going down, so pick wisely.”

For all the travelling he's done, Dorian hasn't had much chance to explore Sinnoh, and the dig had seemed a perfect opportunity to have a little fun while also exploring one of the region's curiosities. After texting Soleil for hours on end with a combination of emojis and excited outbursts, he finds himself standing with the group outside the yawning cavern.

He can barely contain his pent-up energy, bouncing up and down on the balls of his feet as the old miner—Pierce, Dorian will remember that—goes over the rules.

As they reach the elevator, he pairs up with Soleil and chatters excitedly about their latest findings as it clatters down into the tunnel depths. As they regroup at the bottom, he immediately notes that Pierce doesn't indicate the leftmost tunnel as a choice. What could be down there? He's peering curiously into its depths when a sound echoes from the rightmost tunnel, drawing his attention.

"Ooh, a challenge!" The fact that it could be dangerous doesn't worry him as much as it should; there's plenty of them here, and if they're sticking together, what's the worst that could happen? "I think we should go that way."

Gabriel was truthfully excited for any opportunity that allowed for his portfolio as a photographer to grow. That was the main reason he had signed up to explore the mines with a various group of strangers. He kept his camera on it's strap, snapping pictures upon walking up to the mine, even as they had to pair up and head down the lift. He found himself paired with a woman, who was attractive and one of the potential people he'd use as models, whether she wanted to or not. "Name's Gabriel by the way," He introduced himself upon stepping onto the lift with the female.

He listened carefully to Pierce the Miner, as he began to quickly think of which tunnel he wanted to go down. But, he heard someone quickly suggest the tunnel to the right, with a sudden, loud sharp sound coming right from inside it. "I concur with the cutie over there," He spoke, going along with first person to speak up. He quickly peered around the group, noting everyone that had came down, waiting for the others to make their vote. "Quick question though. What's down the left tunnel? You didn't make any mention of it like the others," Gabriel asked curiously, wondering what could possibly be down there.

If anything, he'd get to explore the tunnels with the beautiful people around him. They were all attractive, aside from Pierce, but he was thankful for that. He needed someone he wasn't attracted to be the official leader, or guide, for their descent into the tunnels.

He'd originally come to Sinnoh hoping to leave his swablu with Grandma Wilma so that it could learn draco meteor from her like his dragonair and dragonite had back in Blackthorn. Unfortunately, and much to his embarrassment, he'd forgotten that the little bird would not gain dragon traits until it evolved. It could not utilize the move yet. So, he'd gotten the "better luck next time" treatment from his old friend and sent on his way - but not before being told of an interesting opportunity she'd seen on TV.

A little research and some completed forms on his phone later and here he was, following some old guy around like a tourist. Gavin help out hope, however, crossing his fingers that they weren't just about to run around in circles underground for a few hours before being handed souvenir trinkets. The young man sighed. Most of the others in his group seemed to have bought in fully, unlike himself. Their chipperness was somewhere between revolting and nauseating.

But at least they asked good questions.

He'd been wondering about the tunnel the miner had neglected to mention as well.

"What did they mine down here before?" Then, as an afterthought, he added, "Oh and count me in for the right tunnel."

Afterwards, Gav turned to glance over at the person he'd shared the lift ride down with, shrugging. It was either that or the forbidden path and well, he didn't want to try that one without a better grasp of what was going on down here first.

Ten in the morning was far too early for someone who had been drinking only six hours ago. Sharpe said as much in her texts to her friend, the one who was supposed to come with her to the treasure hunt, but had chickened out and was lying comfortably in bed and encouraging her to treat her hangover with good, old-fashioned hair of the dog.

Fucking alcoholic Sharpe texted in return. Ten seconds later, when she found herself in a narrow lift, she found the flask of cheap whiskey that she kept in her leather coat and took a small—definitely un-alcoholic—sip.

”Arceus’s tits!” she cursed under her breath when she realized she wasn’t alone in the lift. She lowered her sunglasses, which she used to make everything pleasantly dark, and saw the handsome young man who had entered the lift with her.

She groaned as balls of light hammered into her eyes during their descent. Replacing her sunglasses, she looked away and half-heartedly answered, ”Gabriel, hey. I’m Sharpe.”

A few moments later, after realizing that the odd mechanical sound that was followed by a bright flash of light was coming from him and his camera, she grabbed his arm (partly for emphasis, partly to steady herself) and added, ”Gabriel, baby, can you ease up on the flash for a while? You’re killin’ me with that shit.”

She removed her sunglasses the further down the mine they went—it was either that or living in near-absolute darkness occasionally punctured by small muted orbs of light. She rubbed a small ache away from her eyes, took another sip, and waited for the deafeningly-loud (to her, at least) lift to ferry the rest of the group down the mine.

It was pleasant in the mine, peaceful in much the same way a coffin was, and already the symptoms of her hangover were being chased away by the cheap whiskey she was nursing. Occasionally, she would check her belt to make sure Kojak's pokéball was still there; she wasn't accustomed to him being in his ball for very long, which was a shame as he was probably better-equipped to finding a fire stone than she was that particular morning.

As their guide (what was his name? Rhys?) finished describing their choices, Sharpe would have been content on going down the easy route for a bit, but someone voiced eager support for the difficult tunnel. She turned to see the owner of the voice, knowing who he was before seeing him.

Then, another member of their group voiced his support, and then another. Well, there went any hope of having a relaxing morning. Seeing which way the wind was blowing, she stretched, yawned, and waited for the group to get going, not particularly interested in contributing to the group dialogue.

TREASURE HUNT GROUP THREAD

Pierce quickly realizes he has an interesting group with him. He doesn't think this is a good thing.

One of the kid snaps pictures, and another complains. Some of them hardly seem used to anything physical beyond throwing a ball to get their pokemon to fight for them.

Photographer Gabriel asks what's down the tunnel furthest to the left, and Pierce replies, "Rocks." Then, more helpfully, "It's untranslatable."

He says nothing more on that matter until another question came up.

"Coal," he explains, "But Sinnoh has since moved onto other, cleaner energy sources. There are parts of these mines that ain't never been explored."

And shouldn't be explored, he thought, but he wasn't the one making the decisions here.

They vote on the hardest tunnel, and Pierce looks skeptical. They're eager, but are they prepared? Simply going through these tunnels is challenge enough, and that tunnel...well, he's never been down there himself. He isn't sure what to expect once they're in there.

But he'd given them the option and in his thirty years of mining, he's never had an incident beyond a sprained ankle or a missing eye.

"Alright, then. Follow me," he says, leading the party on. "And watch yourself."

The tunnel is easy enough at first, not quite as wide as the chamber they'd entered but not stifling. Stray rocks obstruct parts of the path and then they come to their first obstacle—a turn down a very narrow path. Quite literally between a rock and a hard place, except that hard place is another rock.

Pierce squeezes through and waits for the others. His flashlight shines on the room they've stumbled upon. The sound of water dripping onto the floor echoes through the room.

He shines his light upon the walls, and it illuminates strange, white etchings scrawled across them. There's only a scattering, and Pierce only recognizes them vaguely from other parts of these tunnels he's seen them in. They're of no discernible language, but still manage to set him on edge.

Underneath the writing, he sees what looks like rock cracked down the middle from perhaps some other group's attempts to break it down. The stones shine white where they'd been broken

"Looks like a good spot," he says, and heaves drops his pack, taking the pickax into his hands. "Who wants to take a crack at it?"

Colette yawns daintily, a perfectly manicured hand placed just slightly over her perfectly lipsticked mouth, only for emphasis that she finds this entire ordeal painfully boring, even if she secretly is brimming with excitement she isn't going to show it and let everyone know that she actually cares about something other than herself. She flips her delicate blonde hair out of her face in one fluid motion and peers around at her companions on this venture, all outwardly showing the excitement she keeps inside, except for one man who she can tell is a little hesitant, and he's probably more practical than anyone else here, so Colette instantly latches onto him (figuratively, not literally even though she wouldn't mind it) and decides that he'll be her partner. Anyone is better than Archie, who she spotted relatively early on because she's kind of always looking for his bright white hair wherever she goes, even though she tells herself its to avoid him she secretly wishes he'll spot her and talk to her before she has to lower her standards and talk to him. She latches onto another guy and hopes that Archie will notice, and even if he doesn't, hey, this boy is pretty cute.

It's Colette's job to look nonchalant, unbothered, but she knows she'll have a hard time of it on this dig, especially with her vespiquen locked away tight. She fingers the pokéball in her bag, frowns, and then turns to introduce herself to her partner. "I'm Colette." She flashes her pretty white smile at him and extends her slim fingers for a handshake, which she figures is appropriate, and then retracts it swiftly when the lift starts up. She's never liked elevators, afraid of a cable snapping or something and sending her straight down to her death, and she's never liked the jolting of it. She grips her partner hard around the arm and steels herself.

Colette steps out of the lift, a little shaken, doubting her sanity with the idea of doing this. At the mention of the paths, she'll easily pick the safest one, but it seems no one's with her in that frame of mind. She shifts uncomfortably at the agreement to take the rightmost, hardest path, but shrugs when they take polls, like isn't terrified.

She's not prepared for any of this, she knows. Hell, she's wearing a tube top and sandals, which are better than her preferred heels but open-toed and not the shoes for walking on rock. She shivers, arms crossed over her chest, and looks up at her partner. Her only advantage is that she's small and slim, though she has been putting on healthy weight in her abdomen, it bulges just barely over the top of her jeans and she pulls them up to hide it.

She pauses for a moment at the etchings, intrigued (although she'll never admit it), and runs a hand over them, staring at the thin white dust that comes off on her fingertips. She doesn't know what to make of them. "Should we be destroying them?" She means by cracking through the rock right here. "I mean, what if they're historical?" She wants to add in a it's not like I care but, she does care, something about these runes draws her in, like a moth to flame. They might be dangerous, they might not.

An inch of nothing for your soul.

Having lost her cellular signal in the caves, Sharpe was forced to pay slightly more attention to her surroundings. Actually, she was forced to pay a lot more attention, because it wasn’t just rocks, was it? She didn’t know what zubat shit looked like, but she was willing to bet it was just everywhere.

She held her small but durable pocket flashlight (it showed signs of being dropped frequently) and trained the beam on the ground, determined not to trip on any loose rocks or step in any Pokémon shit. Occasionally, she reached out to touch the cave walls, running her hands along the rough cold surface and wondering how long it took to dig a tunnel like this.

When they reached a narrow bend along the path, Sharpe unshouldered her pack and squeezed her narrow frame through without much difficulty. After all, she survived rock climbing after the disastrous decision to cook and consume soup containing paras mushroom oil. And, more importantly, she was enjoying her whiskey.

Once through, she aimlessly examined the room (was it called a room?), finding it slightly disconcerting that she couldn’t really tell how big or small the room was—the oppressive darkness and directionless echoes would have turned a bathroom the size of a stadium.

She observed the guide looking at some shit on the walls, but she didn't know what was so interesting. Was it that white stuff that she thought could be zubat poop after all? His offer to have them use his pickaxe was decidedly not something she was interested in, either; she had somehow convinced herself that she would simply find nuggets and elemental stones just lying around.

Without hesitation, she crossed her arms and said with a weary chuckle, ”Oh, this’ll be good. I call not it.” She retreated away from the rocks and stood with Gabriel, who seemed more interested in snapping a picture rather than participating. Something about seeing gorgeous men (because they were gorgeous, weren’t they?) handle a pickaxe was tremendously funny to her.

One of the other participants in the group, a blonde who looked like she had gotten lost on the way to the bar, voiced concerns about mining the rocks, to which Sharpe responded, ”Well, there's a simple way to find out. Is this a treasure hunt or what?”

Yes, indeed, she was enjoying her whiskey very much. She found the flask in her vest, unscrewed the top, offered a taste to Gabriel, and took a small, delicious sip.

She's explored a few caves before this, mostly in tour groups or with her parents and a group of researchers. Her area of expertise doesn't usually lead her to caves, but she finds them exciting nonetheless. There's so much unknown here that exhilarates her. Perhaps she'll be the first one to find a new Pokemon variant hiding among the darkness, or she'll discover a tunnel that has long since been lost to time. The darkness doesn't bother her, either. Plus, she has Dorian with her. There are others here, people she doesn't know and will probably never see again, and she awkwardly smiles and waves to a few of them that look her way, but past that, she doesn't talk to them.

By the time they reach the inner room with nowhere else to turn, Soleil's grabbed her notebook out of her bag, hurriedly scribbling down what little she can make of the runes on the wall. Languages have never been her strong suit, but if she had to guess, she'd go with some sort of primitive dialect of the language used in Sinnoh. She'll send it to her mother's linguistic friends when she returns home. For now, she puts the notebook away, satisfied with what she's written down, and looks around, hesitant to take a pickaxe and start hacking at the wall. Another woman pipes up, concerned about the very same thing, and Soleil can only help but agree.

"Have you had researchers down here to document this?" Her scribbles aside, if nobody's carefully examined these runes, then they'll be lost once they destroy the wall. Breaking down walls and searching for treasure is admittedly what they came here for, but she didn't know there would be a possible historical site here.

His eyes linger on the blond from the elevator, his new partner he guessed, even as their guide starts going about answering questions. Gav remembers her introducing herself on the ride down with a quick handshake. It'd prompted him to mumble his own name in return, though he'd been too lost in sorting out his thoughts then to remember much beyond the exchange. Now that he has the time, he makes a quick assessment of her and decides that he quite likes her, if only for the fact that she was bold enough to come down in a skimpy tube top and a pair of sandals. He himself had gone the opposite route, sacrificing appearance for practicality in throwing on a tattered black tee and a pair of frayed jeans in addition to his standard hiking boots, favoring them because he wouldn't miss them should they become damaged.

To complete his look, he'd also bought a head-mounted flashlight to make his life easier. Gavin fished it from his backpack, strapped the thing around his head and put the light on upon seeing everyone else whip out flashlights.

At least they'd all come somewhat prepared. It sort of surprised him. As did the answers the miner gave. Calling the mystery tunnel "untranslatable" struck the young man as odd. It seemed like a horribly specific word choice. The response to his own question doesn't seem quite right either. Especially the part about sections of the mine not having been explored yet. That told him that at least some of the tunnels were naturally occurring because otherwise, the miners would have had to have "explored" them when they dug them. The dude didn't look like he was lying - the only other possibility - so maybe his day was going to be more interesting than he'd anticipated after all.

He gives another shrug and then does as he is told, following after the guy down the tunnel they'd chosen. It's easy enough until he's asked to shove his rather large frame through a rather narrow opening but he manages it, coming out the other end scuffed up yet otherwise intact.

Once he gets his bearings, Gav shoots his partner a sympathetic look upon noticing her glancing up at him. He too felt a slight chill so he could only imagine how much worse it was baring that much skin. And since he had no jacket to offer her, he could only trail after her and hope that the proximity of his body heat would help in whatever small way.

"Probably just grafitti," he responds, answering for the miner. A second later, Gav pulls out his phone and slides it by Colette's face to snap a few pictures of the writing she's ogling before moving to capture the rest of it. "But just in case, consider it documented."

He holds his phone up rather smugly for a moment, then slips it back in his pocket before taking the few short steps over to where the miner stood and accepting the pickax.

If no one else was going to do it...

"What am I looking for again?" Gav chimes, before hefting the thing over his head and bringing it slamming down on the indentation marking some previous group's failed attempt at unearthing something.
