Gavin wasn't normally a beach person. Something about laying around for hours at a time doing nothing didn't sit well with him. As a result, he tended to avoid them when possible - unless he was forced to go to one, like now. It had been awhile since his pokemon had gotten any substantial amount of exercise given that Celadon wasn't exactly giant dragon friendly so he figured he should get it out of the way before doing anything else.

The beach was the perfect place. Where else would huge water pokemon better be able to stretch out? Gav knew, of course, that he couldn't let them loose on the public beach - but there were plenty of sandbars not too far away. He could see them. It was only a matter of getting there.

Rather than climb atop Altair's back like usual, however, the trainer decided to avoid creating a panic and summoned Zephyr so that he could fly over instead.

It did not go as planned.

No sooner had the dragonite appeared than a crowd of interested spectators began to form. Many of them were preteen girls cooing about how cute the pokemon was, some even daring to reach out a hand to pet him.

"Hey! Don't do that!" Gavin warned. To no one's surprise though, Zephyr seemed to like the attention, flexing his wings for his newfound fans.

Begrudgingly, his trainer allowed them all the chance to pose for pictures, face palming all the while. It wasn't until he heard a pretty distinct challenge that he became aware of his surroundings again.

"What?"

"I said, 'I bet I can beat it.' Your dragonite."

The source of the insult turned out to be a girl around his age, fire in her eyes. He knew the type too well and, if he were to guess, she probably had some cutesy fairy lined up to help make her point.

"You wanna go?" Gav challenged, scanning the crowd in the meanwhile.

"Absolutely."

"Great. I see that your friend has a pokemon too. I'll be nice and let her help you out. In fact, I'll even make this a two on two so you stand a chance."

"You're on!"

And that's how he ended up inexplicably drafting the bro-iest bro into a double battle.

"Hey guy! Let's go," he ordered, bounding over to swing an arm around the dude's neck to escort him over to the spot on the beach that was being cleared for the upcoming match. Gavin wasn't about to let him refuse. The guy had the only steel or poison type that he could see on the beach. His earlier survey had turned up no other candidates so he was stuck, all the while having the awful feeling he might have made an awful mistake putting his trust in a total stranger.

"You know how this works right?"

The beach! It was warm, the smell of the water was brushing through the air, and the sun felt amazing on his skin. Mateo was dressed appropriately for the occasion - as in, he really only had swim trunks on. He and his team were taking the day off, spending part of the day in the water and playing in the sand. There were many things to do and many things they could do. At the moment, his direct attention was towards building the most boss sand castle he could.

There were some kids trying to make a castle, and he thought it would be fun. He was correct, of course, sloppily throwing sand in places to make piles for towers and walls. Luci and Dax were on the other sides of the castle, patting the sand that was trying to fall off the walls to prevent further holes bringing everything down. Amy was out as well, sticking closer to the water than he was but still with him. When he needed more moisture in order to get the sand to shape properly, he was asking her to spit up water for him to use instead of going the 6 feet to get some himself.

Besides, he didn't have a bucket or anything to hold the water in.

But his focus on the castle (which while it was 'coming along great' to him, was actually a lopsided blob that was falling apart) was thoroughly distracted as he heard a commotion, noting people moving and coalescing around a... dragonite? His head perked up, interested in looking at the dragon. Now that was a cool pokemon. Not the fiercest one, but hey, it was a dragon. He could respect.

Standing and dusting off his trunks, he headed over to get a closer look, snatching his drawstring bag. He whistled to the others, Amy huffing before following along. The little slug enjoyed the water, but never seemed to enjoy his shenanigans much. The electric types bounded happily behind him. Mateo popped over to the crowd, eventually finding his way to the front of the crowd with a bit of stumbling and a few groans from his pushing through. But he popped out on the other side in time for the duo to come up and challenge the trainer.

Ohhh, how exciting! He was ready to watch this match. He wanted to see the dragon in action. So when the guy came over and slung an arm around his neck to have him join in a double battle, he was ecstatic. It was a good thing he'd grabbed his bag with his pokeballs. "Heck yeah! Let's do this!" He started ruffling in his bag for the pokeballs as they walked towards the makeshift battlefield, but paused for a second as he pulled out the shellos' pokeball. "Oh, Amy where'd ya go?" He turned his head, waiting for a moment as people cleared up until the shellos could be seen, taking her sweet time as she moved towards him.

"Let's return you, for now." He smiled as he spoke, pulling out the ball and clicking the button. The red light shot out, encompassing the pokemon and pulling her back into the safe storage of the device. He returned his attention to following this guy's lead to the battle. Measuring up the other two pokemon in his mind as the rodents caught up to them, he made his decision. "Dax, take a break as well. Don't want you jumping in out of excitement." He pulled out the second pokeball and returned the pikachu.

Once they arrived at their position on the battlefield, he motioned for Luci to take her place. "Alright Luci, let's show 'em what we got." Smiling brightly, he watched as the togedemaru bounded out in front of him to take her place, chittering as she did so. He turned to look at his battle partner. "I'm excited to see your big guy in action! Let's show 'em how it's done." His confidence was definitely over the top, but he and the steel type had been training for a long time. She was definitely the most skilled of his pokemon, and they were both excited about this match. He looked over to see what they were up against, ready to see what the two girls were bringing to the field.

The bro's antics immediately following the invitation to the match did not inspire much confidence. In fact, Gavin had already begun to wonder if it was too late to change his mind and take on the two girls alone. Wasted time given that the guy's pokemon was already on the field. Consequently, he put a hand to his mouth and issued a sharp whistle, summoning Zephyr.

The dragon was reluctant to give up basking in all the attention he was getting at first but quickly realized that a battle would be the perfect way to show off for his admirers. He landed with a hard thud not a minute after the bro's rodent took the field.

What is that again? Gav thought to himself. He knew it was from Alola and that it was a steel slash electric type but all other details escaped him. Before he could actually ask aloud, however, a flash of light caught his attention and then produced a white ninetales. He did not need any further help identifying that particular pokemon; it was a favorite of challengers back at the gym.

Now he knew why she was so confident.

"Alright then," the trainer began, just as another flash of light revealed a blastoise in place of the azuril that had been by her friend's side. "Two-on-two battle, two pokemon per person. No use of items. Last side with a pokemon standing wins. That okay with everyone?"

Ready agreement rang out across the field, prompting Gavin to turn to his new partner whom he'd unintentionally ignored for a moment. He wasn't looking for the answer to his question though.

"Alright, pretty sure they're going to gang up on your furball first. Focus on the ninetales. I'll have dragonite run interference on the blastoise and then we can --"

"Ninetales! Hit the togedemaru with your ice beam!"

"Blastoise! Use hydropump on it!"

So much for pleasantries.

"Zephyr! Counter with hyper beam!" The words were said even as Gavin turned to stare down the guy whose name he did not yet know, hoping to goad him into action. "Don't let me down, kid!"

"Two on two. Nice." His agreement was quieter, less needed than that of the two women across the field, but he approved of the set up. He was excited to get into a double battle with this stranger. Who had a dragonite no less! Who knew what other impressive pokemon the guy had waiting in his arsenal. He was giddy with anticipation.

The two pokemon across the field were somewhat impressive too. The form of the ninetales was a flashback to home, since that specific variety of the pokemon was only known to his own region. Huh, so he supposed it would be an Alola battle. He idly wondered whether she was also from Alola or not, but focused on the battle rather than that. The Blastoise was cool, but otherwise not worth much more though given his duo of electric types.

Then the battle immediately started, the girls apparently throwing out the established league battle ettiquette of challenger strikes second, without so much as letting the guy finish his sentence. One that really didn't even need spoken to him. His grin widened as he heard the commands from their opponents, having expected them to gang up on the little rodent. That was always the first mistake. Every always assumed that the little guy was weak and unable to fight well, or that it was only a pokemon that newbies got.

But Lucianna and Mateo had been training for years, and she might even have more experience than either of these goofs who launched powerful yet slow attacks at such a small and agile opponent. His own strategy would be to take down the big, easy to hit target first and then worry about the little guy, or just focus on both as his team seemed to be doing. Expecially since the ninetales was a fairy type.

"Luci, you know the drill. Dodge, get close, and gyro ball on the ninetales." Though the togedemaru's speed generally made the attack less powerful than it would be for other, much slower species, it was still a steel type move. He'd went through the effort to train and teach her that move from the guide he'd bought, specifically because it was such a useful type to have. And here was the perfect situation for it, given the ninetales' huge weakness to steel.

Luci moved into action, jumping out of the way of the attacks and into a rolling motion, where she'd be quickest. Her fur was spiked and standing straight up at attention, a quirk natural to her species, and much more vicious than regular fur. She sped off and around, getting out of the way of the ice beam and hydro pump that collided into the spot she'd just been in, the water splashing and freezing in place. She rolled, gaining as much speed as she could, having just narrowly gotten away from the ice beam. It wouldn't have been too devastating, given her resistance to ice, but avoidance is better.

The rodent charged forward and barrelled into the ninetales, even as its trainer called out for the pokemon to dodge. The fluffy white fox had started to move, but it wasn't exactly a snap action to turn off a powerful beam of focused ice. Luci crashed into it and rebound off of the creature, landing on the ground with a couple rolls before standing on her feet once again. The fur on her was standing on end, as she prepared to continue the battle. Mateo was ready to call out an action, pending the results of the dragonites hyper beam, while making a note to comment on the 'kid' thing later.

Gavin watched the rodent roll out of danger with a grin. Maybe he'd underestimated his bro. His intention had been to block the ice beam with Zephyr's hyper beam. That was no longer necessary given that the target wasn't there anymore. Consequently, Gav let out another whistle. The easiest way to catch his pokemon's attention in the midst of battle. Nothing else had to be said.

His dragonite pivoted, turning to blast the blastoise with his attack. It completely blindsided the creature and his trainer, sending the former tumbling backwards into the sand with a groan.

"Hey! That was a cheap shot!"

The complaint didn't really have time to register with anyone being immediately drowned out by the pained cries of her friend's ninetales as the rodent barreled into it.

"Not bad!" Gav blurted, voicing his approval of his partner's handiwork upon glancing over. "Not bad at all."

"Blastoise, ice beam that dragonite!"

"Should've seen that coming." The remark was sarcastic, muttered dismissively under his breath rather than as an actual rebuke of himself because he had, in fact, expected such an attack. Everyone and their mother seemed to have a water pokemon capable of ice attacks that they wanted to use against his dragons. Nonetheless, his attention was now fully on the shellfish again."Dragon rush!"

"What?!"

"You think a little ice beam is going to bother my dragonite? I spent five years at the Blackthorn Gym. He's taken more of them than I can count."

As if to prove his master's point, Zephyr charged straight into the blastoise's attack, headed on a collision course with the creature that was sure to cause a huge impact.

Mateo's ever present smile widened at the praise from his battle partner. From someone who seems to prefer giant powerhouses, it was a great thing to hear. "You don't have to worry about us. We won't drag you down." His experienced togedemaru had been through the ringer more than most pokemon, as trainers were generally prone to switching out pokemon on their team over the years, changing based on the mood or the situation. While he hadn't gotten really into the league as of yet, his little rodent was the constant battler for many years.

He chuckled at Gavin's sarcastic remark. To be fair, using ice attacks on a dragon type was generally a solid strategy. No matter how well the dragon put up with the attack, it was defintiely effective against their type. But as the dragonite rushed into the attack to crash into the blastoise, his attention fully returned on his own fight.

"Ninetales, use extrasensory!"

Extrasensory... that wasn't what he'd expected. Psychic type move, but there was no way it would miss. Made sense, as the pokemon had dodged the first hit to use something that is powerful and impossible to see. Luci was still rolling when the pressure of the unseen attack crashed in on her, causing her to squeak, promptly followed by a growl that sounded anything but threatening. But she wasn't going to be stopped so easily.

"Luci, Zing Zap!" He shouted out, half-questioning whether he should use discharge. It seemed like a good idea, since he'd be hitting the ninetales while getting an electric hit on the blastoise, but it wasn't worth risking hitting the dragonite, who was now moving in towards the blastoise. The dragon would be weak to the attack, and he couldn't bring down his bro.

Lucianna enthusiastically moved into her next attack, chittering as she jumped into another rolling motion, electricity coursing around her body as her speed increased. She may not be the absolute quickest of pokemon out there, but there was no denying the creature had intense speed that was an asset in battle. The opposing trainer called out an ice shard attack, a quick attack likely to try and fend off Luci, but it wasn't enough to stop her. Her resistance to ice was certainly a factor in the fact that the shard crashing into her side only curved her path to crashing into the fox rather than stopping her completely.

When Zephyr pressed his assault, his opponent did the expected and ordered the shellfish to withdraw in anticipation, limiting the damage the ice beam was able to do. Perhaps if she'd had the fortitude to stay on offense, she might have maintained the advantage. As it turned out, however, his dragon's attack was the one that landed, colliding with the inert blastoise and sending it pinwheeling across the beach to the terror of those in its path.

"Looks like your attack didn't do any damage!" the girl crowed, once the crowd had parted far enough for them to see her turtle again. She was absolutely right of course, but it didn't matter.

"We can fix that," Gav countered, just as his partner called out another attack of his own. This time, he payed less attention, trusting in the bro's earlier remark about being able to handle himself. "Zephyr, dragon rush!"

"Again? You think you'll have better luck this time? Blastoise, withdraw!"

"Not exactly."

She didn't know it yet but he had her right where he wanted her, doing what he predicted she'd do. So, before the dragon rush could connect a second time, he amended his pokemon's order.

"Zephyr! Grab it and launch it at her partner's ninetales!"

"NO!"

His dragonite spread its wings, breaking sharply within feet of the blastoise before lurching forward to grab it by the top and bottom openings on its shell. Zephyr's body then twisted to accrue torque, sending the turtle flying in a line towards the target, which had just taken a hit from the bro's rodent.

"You up for switching off?" Gavin shouted, just in case his new partner wasn't on the same wavelength as he was yet.

The blastoise flipped away from the battlefield, and the dragon was ordered to continue to press the assault, even as the girl across from him was countering that the attack had been useless. Nobody was that confident without a plan though. Mateo was sure this guy knew what he was doing, and focused in on his own fight, keeping an eye on how his partner's battle was progressing as he did so.

Luci was riled up and hopped back after hitting the ninetales, the crash ending her rolling. Which was good, as getting the togedemaru to stop rolling was generally the challenge. It could be troublesome when a fast opponent was able to dodge their attacks and keep her rolling until she hit something. Also, it tended to put her into a right foul mood. No thank you to that. He really wasn't in the mood to get shocked.

The woman called out another ice beam attack, probably trying to pin Lucianna down in one spot if she could. It was smart, but before he could retaliate, the other side intensified in quite a hilarious turn of events. The dragonite lifted the blastoise, who was tucked inside the shell, and chucked it towards the ice-type, effectively distracting the fox from performing her attack fully. The shout out just heightened the laughter building in his throat.

"Switchsies! Let's do it, right after this message." He gave his partner a thumbs up. "Luci, oppo side and discharge!" If the dragonite was at a distance, and on the other side of the two large pokemon, then it led that the dragon would be safe from the electrical discharge of energy. The two of them should absorb everything, and anything that somehow managed to make it past them would be too weak to inflict any damage.

So Luci rolled into action, moving around as the blastoise collided into the ninetales, who'd barely managed to avoid the brunt of the shell hitting it. But there was a little too much going on for the ninetales or blastoise to react quick enough to avoid the togedemaru's incoming attack. She got shelved behind then and unrolled, stretching out her body as the sparks encompassing her sharp fur generated more electricity, releasing all the energy stored within her pouches and fur. The lightning cackled and bursted from her, reaching out and shocking the two pokemon, creating a burst of sharp lights all around the rodent as it did so.

Zephyr had been about to chase after the projectile he'd just hurled through the air when Gavin waved him off, instead ordering the dragon to power up a hyper beam to either finish the ninetales off with or provide a wake up call for the blastoise the moment it finally came out of that shell. He had to hand it to the girl, Cara - her friend had screamed the name when the fox got beaned. That was one strong turtle. But God was it annoying.

Immediately afterward, Gav had the same thought about his battle partner, quirking an eye at the guy's reply. Had he been like that as a kid? He didn't seem to remember it if he had.

Bro acquitted himself well though, firing up an electrical attack that lit up the beach... and frizzed up their opponent's hair.

Now it was his turn to laugh.

"Caitlin! Your hair!"

"Hyper beam."

A stream of light lanced downward, striking the ninetales. If the discharge hadn't finished it off, that last volley surely had.

"NO!"

Gav turned and gave his partner a thumbs up. One down. Three to go. He was interested to see what else the girl who thought she could take down his dragonite had in store for them. Hopefully something challenging. But not boring like a cloyster. Her friend's frigging blastoise was still sitting there, tucked into its shell in case it was attacked again. How dull.

"Hey, is your turtle going to come out and play or am I going to have to Super Mario your friend's pokemon again?"

Mateo burst out laughing as the electricity frizzed up the duo's hair, ignoring the fact that one of them yelled out as the hyper beam shot out and finished off the ninetales. The fairy was down for the count, for sure. She looked livid that her pokemon had been taken down so easily. Well, that's what happens when trainers rely too much on type advantages. What mattered in a battle was strategy - typing was just a piece of the puzzle.

The ice fox was returned to her pokeball, as they waited to see what the next choice would be. If they had it their way, the blastoise would be left to Luci. The electric type would have the clear advantage, both in typing and in speed. Her small size would also help her dodge any of the massive attacks the turtle could dish out, and given the trainer's current strategy of just withdrawing from all attacks, he wasn't worried that she'd be able to outsmart him and pull of a strong hit on the rodent.

"That stupid rat ruined it!" The girl angrily grasped a pokeball, but her friend spoke up. "No! We need to focus on the dragon first!" The girl was grinding her teeth, looking between the two pokemon as time ticked, before switching her hand and pulling a different pokeball. She smirked as she tossed out the ball, releasing the pokemon.

And out came a ... Flygon. Oh, that might be a problem for Luci. There wasn't much worry that the togedemaru could do much damage against that. Sure, gyro ball could still do normal damage, but all of her electric moves were out of the question. Well, good thing they were planning on switching, if that blastoise ever decided to come out of it's shell. He had a feeling they wouldn't underestimate Lucianna again though.

And yet, it didn't seem like she was concerned with the electric-type at the moment. "Dragon Rush on the dragonite, now!" Well, that could pose a problem for his buddy, but he'd let him deal with that. For the moment, he returned his attention to the blastoise, taking advantage of the free moment. "Luci, charge!" He knew after the discharge, she'd be low on electricity. If they wanted to use a stronger attack again, she needed to collect some energy. The air around the togedemaru started to spark and light up as she gathered energy, her fur standing on end.

The other girl called out as she did so, apparently thinking she found an opportunity. "Hydro pump on that little pest!" Finally, the turtle came out of it's shell, standing and looking to face Luci, before starting to power up its cannons. "Hey, she's not a rat or a pest. Get your terms right! Or at least get your hair in order before you go insulting others." He snickered as he glanced at their hair again, taking only a moment before moving on in the battle, curious what his partner would do about the new dragon on the field.
